Company history
Suffolk and Essex Joinery Ltd was formed 20 years ago from the shell of a small sole trader, who unfortunately failed due the pressures of the recession. Steve Welsh at that time was running a small development company which was in need of a high-quality joinery supplier. He approached Paul Carr, a long-term architectural acquaintance, with the intention of buying the assets of the sole trader and developing a design, manufacturing and installation specialist initially for the housing industry. The business also came with two key employees; Neil Bates, who is now works Director and Sean Butterworth, now Design Director.
In time, it became clear there was a need to appeal to a wider market. The business plan was changed to widen its horizons, hence the current capability to work for some of the most notable architects and construction companies in the UK.
The growth of the company has been excellent, but controlled, with a turnover now approaching £6 million. The individual input from all the directors has been complementary, Steve Welsh’s quantity surveyor background with William Sindall and Kier, Paul Carr’s architectural background, Neil Bates’s and Sean Butterworth’s input on the design detail and probably most importantly, quality.
With £100K+ this year invested in new high-tech plant, including an in-house veneering line, company policy on in-house training and two new apprentices starting, the future of Suffolk and Essex Joinery Ltd looks excellent.
